I went in today to pick up a pair of near field monitors. When I mentioned that to the sales staff, they looked at me like I was from another planet. After explaining that they are used to mix recordings, the salesperson took me back to the recording area.
I used to buy from this store a few years ago when I was Tech Director at a nearby college.
Cool group of guys who work there. Its really fun to talk with other musicians and try out all sorts of guitars.
They offered to order them and said they would be in next Friday. Why would I drive 50 miles AGAIN to pick them up in a week when any number of online sellers could have them delivered free at the same price in two days?
I brought some business cards in and asked if I could leave a few by the cash register. I have always done this in the past. There was a business card holder sitting right there with somebody's business cards in it. The clerk told me I would have to put my business cards on a cork board in the back hallway (where nobody ever goes). I declined. Might as well throw them out rather than that.
I went to help my friend pick out a new guitar. He wanted a higher end model, but the selection was very small compared to other guitar centers I've been to. Staff was actually better than a lot of music store I've gone to.
Stopped to buy a gift for my son (a cowbell). Got some excellent service and suggestions and found one that should be perfect. We discussed amps for me and again got some good advice. I've never had bad service there and enjoy visiting with the employees.
So, I said I'd take a pair of the JBLs, which are listed as IN STOCK on the web page RIGHT NOW, and they told me that they were out of stock. I asked them how that could be possible, and they said that the ones hooked up to the Ableton abomination must be in the inventory. Who puts their floor demos into their online inventory?
Ok, first off, they had no way to play a reference cd, iTunes, mp3s, or any other source other than some mindless, crummy Ableton live project that was full of basser blats and ridiculous synth bleats. I already knew which product I wanted, but I wanted to hear comparisons anyway.
I'm not going back, and I will not recommend them to my students or my recording clients. It's easier and cheaper to order online.
I love how the staff is so willing to help, answer questions, and demonstrate for the customers. Super friendly. We come here for all our musical/ instrument needs.
Since I haven't been in that store for a while, I thought it would be nice to nice to throw them a $500 sale. But the thing is, they've had a 100% turnover in staff, they are not particularly polite or helpful.
